Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust

LOCATION : Latitude - 180 56’43” North and Longitude - 72056’24” East along the eastern shore of Mumbai harbour, South-east of Elephanta Island



Jawaharlal Nehru Port is the 11th Major Port of India commissioned on May 26, 1989. It is the only Port built to international standards with a high level of automation and computerised functioning. It has a land area of 2,500 hectares (6,000 acres).


CONTAINER TERMINAL

The Port has two container terminals, with state-of-the-art post and super post panamax cranes, the JNP Container Terminal and India’s first privatised container terminal, Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) operated by P&O Ports, Australia.  NSICT commenced operations in April 1999.
 
JNP Container Terminal
  • Three Berths (linear quay length of 680 mtrs.).

  • Can handle third generation container vessels.

  • Rail Mounted Quay Cranes – (RMQC) : 6 Nos.

  • Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes – (RTGC) : 14 Nos.

  • Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes – (RMGC) : 3 Nos.

  • Main Container yard : 35 hectares (30,000 TEUs capacity).

  • Additional paved area : 1,80,000 sq. mtrs.

  • Reach stackers : 3 Nos.

  • Tractor Trailers : 60 Nos.

  • Forklifts : 3 Nos.

  • Reefer Slots : 280 Nos.
Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT)
  • Two Berths (linear quay length of 600 mtrs.)

  • Rail Mounted Quay Cranes (RMQC): 5 Nos.

  • Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGC): 12 Nos.

  • Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (RMGC): 2 Nos.

  • Tractor Trailers : 24 Nos.

  • Reefer Slots : 156 Nos.

BULK TERMINAL
Mechanised Berths
  • Two Berths for dry bulk BB-1 & BB - 2 (linear quay length 500 metres).

  • Capacity : 2.9 million tonnes for dry bulk (Import)

  • Each Berth can handle ships up to 70,000 DWT (85,000 DT)

  • Automated system for unloading dry bulk cargo mainly fertiliser, raw material for fertiliser and foodgrains.

  • 2 grab unloaders each with capacity of 400 cu. mtrs. per hour.

  • 2 continuous unloaders each with capacity of 450 cu. mtrs. per hour.

  • Covered conveyor belt system from Berth to storage shed.
Storage, Bagging and Despatch Facilities
  • Fertiliser (3 sheds) : 80,000 to 115,000 tonnes each.

  • Foodgrains (1 shed) : 42,000 tonnes.

  • Bagging storage shed : 50,000 MT in bagged form.

  • Open paved area :1,59,000 sq. mtrs.

  • Covered Railway Platform (2 tracks) 750 mtrs.

  • Scraper Reclaimer : 3 Nos. ; Capacity : 575 tonnes/hr/machine.

  • Bagging machines : 30 Nos. ; Capacity 40 tonnes/hr/machine.
Multi-purpose Berths BB – 3 & BB – 4
  • Conventional handling of import/export of iron ore products, export of foodgrains and import/export of liquid cargo, Class B&C (Safe grade chemicals ).

  • Vessels up to 70,000 DWT can be berthed at the front side (BB-3).

  • Vessels up to 15,000 DWT, 150 metres LOA and 8 metres draft can be berthed at the rear side (BB – 4).

  • Berth connected to tank farms by dedicated as well as common users’ pipelines.

  • Tank farms developed by private users on land leased by the Port.
Facilities for Car Carriers
  • Front side of multi-purpose berth (BB-3) for handling Car Carriers on priority.

  • Ample space for parking of export vehicles near berths prior to arrival of vessel.

  • Exclusive yards for vehicles.


CONTAINER FREIGHT STATIONS (CFS)

There are CFSs operating in and around JN Port, handling adequate warehousing capacities for stuffing and destuffing of containerised cargo.
